The War of Spanish Succession (Blog #2)




During the early 1700's turmoil within Europe broke loose as feuding countries worried about the Bourbon dynasty and its power.


Your assignment:

1). Explain the War of Spanish Succession
2). the conflicts/fights and
3). the overall outcome of the war.

  1. 1). The War of Spanish Succession was a war that started in 1701 and ended in 1714. The Treaty of Utrecht was signed that same year.
    2). Great Britain took the Strait of Gibralter. The Battle of Denain was one of the last battles.
    3). Great Britain won the war. Britain's involvment in trading African slaves increased. Prussia and Savoy were recognised as kingdoms.

  2. 1) The French wanted peace after many years of hardship. In 1700 hundred the king of Spain died. He was childless and his will caused the throne of Spain to fall into the hands of France. Both countries were great powers and now both were ruled by the French Bourbons. This caused other countries to feel threatened, so they all joined together to prevent the union of the French and Spanish thrones.

    2) The Battle of Denain was one of the last battles fought in the War of the Spanish Succession. Also, during the war, Britain took control of the Strait of Gibraltar. This allowed them to control all trade in the Mediterranean, because of the location of this strait.

    3) Great Britain was the big winner of this war. After the war, Great Britain's involvement in the trading of enslaved Africans increased. Also, Britain was given the North American territories of Novia Scotia from France.

  3. 1). The spanish succession was when Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and several German and Italian states joined together to prevent the union of the French and Spanish thrones.

    2). The war was very costly, And a treaty was signed to let louis's grandson to remain the king of spain as long as france and spain were not united.

    3). Great britin took a fortress that controlled the entrance to the mediterranean thus increasing Britain's involvment in trading enslaves africans.

  4. 1) When the grandson of Louis XIV's grandson was promised the throne to Spain, surrounding countries thought that the the balance of power was uneven. They fought the war until 1714.

    2) The Battle of Denain was one of the last battles fought during the war.

    3) In the end, the British were the real winners. Britain took Gibraltar, and were also granted asiento from Spain. Also, the French gave Britain the North American teritories of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and abandoned claims to the Hudson Bay region. The Hapburgs of Austria took the Netherlands from Spain and other lands in Italy.

  5. 1.) In 1701, England, Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and several German and Italian states joined together to prevent the union of the French and Spanish thrones. The long war was called "War of the Spanish Succession". This war lasted until 1714.

    2.) From Spain, Britain took Gibraltar. Gilbraltar is a fortress that controlled the entrance to the Mediterranean. Whoever takes control of Gibraltar has pretty much control of any trading that occurs. There was also the Battle of Denain. The Battle of Denain was one of the last battles fought during the War of the Spanish Succession.

    3.)The final outcome of the war had Great Birtain coming out as the victors. They did this by: taking control of Gibraltar. Also, Spain granted a British company an asiento or the permisson to send enslaved Africans to Spain's American colonies. This increased Britain's involvement in trading enslaved Africans. If that wasn't enough, France gave Britain the North American territories of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

  6. 1). This terrible war was the outcome of Louis XIV rule. It all started when Charles II died right after he promised the throne to Luis's grandson who was 16 at the time. Other countries felt threatened by the bourbons increase in power and they rebeled.

    2). One of the battles of the war of Spanish succesion was the battle of Denain which was one of the last battles of the war. Great britain won the strait of Gibraltar which controlled the entrance to the Mediterranean also during this war.

    3). The biggest winner in the war was great britain. They gained land from both Spain and France. Britain also got more invovled in the slave trade.

  7. 1. The Spanish Succession War was fought among several European powers. This war was between the Spainish Netherlands and the Dutch Netherlands
    2. The conflicts were that neither of them had that great of equipment or supplies so they both were very bad at fighting.
    3. The overall outcome of this war was that there was peace in Spain because they claimed Phillip the King of Spain.

  8. 1. The War of Spanish Succession was, a huge revolt that invovled the Spanish Netherlands, and the Dutch Netherlands.

    2. The conflicts- The Spanish empire weakened, which caused an inflation of taxes. This made Spain's enemies richer than the Spanish. Philip raised the taxes in the Netherlands. Another conflict that brought down the Spanish was they didnt have very good ships.

    3.The overall outcome of this war is, peace in Spain. They crowned Philip as the King of Spain. The people in Spain lived the rest of their lives.

  10. 1) The Spanish Succession, was Spanish Netherlands, and the Dutch.

    2) The conflicts of the war were, that the Spanish had great wealth so that they could afford more for the war, and the Dutch wasn't that wealthy.

    3) The overall outcome of the war was, they crowned Pillip as king in Spain.

  11. 1. The meaning of the War of the Spanish Succession is a conflict, lasting from 1701 to 1713, in which a number of European states fought to pervent the Bourbon family from controlling Spain as well as France.

    2.Some of the conflicts were that the Spanish and French didn't have enough money or food for the war and that is the biggest problem in any war. The war was not very well planed out.

    3.The overall outcome of the war was that Louis XIV's grandson, ended up being the king of Spain as long as the French and Spanish kingdoms didn't reunit.
