Surviving Russian Winters (Blog #4)




Much of Russia's climate is very harsh in terms of cold temperatures and conditions. On page 612 and 613 explains the affects of the Russian Winters. Read these two pages and answer the following questions.

1.) Explain important climatic features of Russia.
2.) Identify Russian methods for coping with their environments.
3.) Do you think climatic factors have become less significant with technological progress, explain.

  1. 1.)the snow starts to fall in october and keeps falling until april. Sibera can get to temps. as low as -90 degrees Farinheit.
    2.)they added potatoes an dcorn to their diet. During the winter, these nutritous foods were used in soups and stews. Such dishes were warming and provided plenty of calories to help fight off colds.
    3.)well i think they can deal with them better since technology bc they can have heat easily.

  2. 1. Since the climate was so cold they had wooden homes to insulate the people stuffed moss between the logs.Russian used double panes of glass in their windows. For extra protection the windows had shutters on them.

    2. They never let the climate stop them. If there was snow on the ground they always made an appoint to get outside. They had a winter festival. Vendors sold, food. The entertainment was,ice skating, dancing bears, and magic shows.

    3.Yes, cause now a days when there is snow on the ground the people just stay inside instead of going out to enjoy it. They get on the internet and sit inside all day in the nice warm house that doesn't have moss for insutaion.

  3. 1) The temperature can go as low as -90 degrees farenheit. It also snows in large quantities.
    2) Russians wore thick furred coats (mostly made of otter fur). They also introduced potatoes and corn into their diets, which would be made into soups and stews in the winter and helped them fight off the cold. The Russians also invented Samovars which were basically what we call stove top coffee water boilers today.
    3) Yes, with more technological advances, to survive in places like Russia is easier. We now have jackets that are thin, but can keep a person warm in very low temperatures. Also, since electricity has become an accessory, many people can plug in somethings like space heaters and warm an entire room. So, technology has played a great role in fighting the climates everywhere.

  4. 1. The climate in Russia is very wintery. Snow started to fall in mid-October and lasts till mid-April. They can have tempertures as low as -90 degrees F.
    2. They coped by adding potatoes and corn to their diet. These were used in stews and soups in the winters to warm up and get enough calories to help them keepp warm.
    3. I believe they have became less significant because of technological progess, because we have more resourses to help us cope with the weather. For insistance we have heaters and AC's. Also we have heavier blankets and different types of clothes to keep us warm. We also have weather channels that will tell us when a storm is coming. People now a day's have a lot of clothes and electrics that can help them cope with the weather if its hot or cold.

  5. 1.) Snow begins to fall in mid-October and lasts untel mid-April. In the 18th century Russians didnt have high tech insulation in their homes.

    2.) Russian peasants added potatoes and corn to their diet. during the winter those foods were used in soups and stews.

    3.) Yes, because of the advanced technology we now can stay warms by staying inside and have much warmer clothing then before.

  6. 1. Russia has severe winters. In Moscow snow usully begins to fall in mid October and lasts intil mid-April. And they have tempuratures as low as -90 degrees farenheit.

    2. Russian peasants added potatoes and corn to their diet. Because during the winter, these nutritious foods were used in soups and stews.Such dishes were warming and provided plenty of calories to help fight off the cold.

    3. Technology today we have better clothes and better houses with installation as well.We also have the advantage of not getting to sick in the cold because we have technology in medicines as well as clothing and other things.

    3) Yes, because when it snows we just stay inside and don't have to go out and do work we can just skip that day, and our houses are well insulated, and we have warmer clothes. then they use too.

  10. 1. Russia has some pretty harsh weather. The snow starts to fall in October and is still falling in April temperature's as low as -90degrees.

    2. They faught off colds by planting and eating potatoes and putting them in soups and stews.

    3. I think as of today we can handle with the weather. We can also plan ahead for the weather because of the weather station radar's and satalite's.

  11. 1) Russia has very long winters with extremely low temperaters. The snowfall usually spans from mid-October to mid-April.
    2) They did not have down parkas or high-tech insulation for their homes, so they had to find other ways to cope with their environment. They added potatoes and corn to their diet which was warming, and also added calories to help fight off the cold. Also, they made wood houses and stuffed moss between the logs to insulate from the wind.
    3) Yes, I think climatic factors have become less significant with technological progress. We now have better heating systems, warmer clothes, and better insulation throughout the world. We also have more advancements in the medical field to help those that get sick from the cold. At one time many people used to die just from the cold of winter, but now with the advancements since then, it doesn't affect very many people hardly at all.

  12. 1.) some of the important climatic features of Russia are that the temperature and weather vary from place to place. the weather can be very cool in some places and warm in others. however in most places, it is very cold.

    2.) Russian have many different ways of coping with their environment. Most Russians wore heavy clothing during the winter and they also added potatoes to their diet which helped in the winter time.

    3.) Yes, because with new technology, there are now new advancements to help to protect against the elements so they are not near as bad now.

  13. 1.The snow there is almost constant from october through april. when it snows there it can get way below freezing. We're talking about 90 degrees below freezing.
    2.they added many nutririous sustances to their diet. This included potatoes and of course some meat to get plenty of protein.
    3.yes, with all the different ways to keep warm and out of the snow people are able to get arround alot easier.
