The Ruler and the State (Blog #12)





Enlightenment ideas spread through the Western World and profoundly influenced government. An "Enlightened" problem-solving approach to government and society prevails in modern civilization today.


Your Assignment:

1.) Explain the relationship between ruler and state. The old idea vs. new idea.

2.) Why must all rulers balance their philosophical goals with practical concerns about support from the people of their state.

  1. 1. A ruler is someone that makes rules and makes the people follow them when a stste makes rules for the people, and those rules apply for the ruler to. Old Idea- The state and it's citizens exists to serve the monarch. As Louis XIV reportadly said,"I am the state". New Idea- The monarch exists to serve the state and support citizens' welfare. As Fredrick the great said, a ruler is only ' the first servent of the state.

    2. The rulers are thinking to much of the feauture about how things are going to be ran, when they should be thinking about how things should be ran in the present....whats happening now.

  2. 1.the ruler was controling over teh area. now everyone has a say and the government makes the law.

    2. they should because then everyone can have a say and be happy. also then the ruler isn't being an absolute monarch.

  3. 1) the ruler was one person making all of the main decisions. the state is a group of people voting on making the decisions.
    2) you may have all of the philosophies in the world but you have to be able to look at them and ask yourself if it is a practical decision.

    2)So that they can listen to the people and help them with the needs that they have thus creating a sweet place to live

    2.) They must balance them because if they didn't they might get out of hand. The people might think that they are trying to control them, so they had to use the the salons. So they could discuss the ideas and philosophical goal with the other people that go to the salons.

  6. 1. The relationship between the old and new ideas. The old idea said that everyone existed to serve the monarch. The new idea says that the monarch exists to serve the state and support welfare.
    2. They must balance their goals that way thye dont become overwelhmed and stressed. By balancing them it makes it easier for the rulers to be stress free and in a good mood.

  8. 1.)The old idea was that nobody cared about the people. The new idea was the thought that they had to start caring for the people.

    2.)Rulers may have their own ideas and they may want to run it the way he wants to run it. But the rulers have to think about the people's thoughts and the will of the people.

  9. 1) The old idea was that the ruler didn't have to listen to the state. The Ruler never cared about the opinion of the people. The new idea was that the ruler should have to listen to the people. Also, the rulers were now expected to follow the ideas of the Enlightenment.

    2) A ruler may have their own ideas, but it is important for them to take into consideration the will of their people. If they don't try to do anything to fix problems, they won't make the people happy and, therefore, won't be wanted as a ruler. However, if they go against what the people want without asking them, they will be overthrown or taken out. This is why the need to have good balance.

  10. 1.) The ruler is a person who governs the people of a country and the state is the people of the country. The old idea was that the ruler could do whatever they wanted and the state didn't have a say in anything. The new idea is that the state can say what they feel.

    2.) If the rulers focus only on their goals, they may not get any support from the state because the people dont know what the ruler is trying to do, so they probably will not support the ruler.

  11. 1)Rulers didn't care about what the people think. Now they realize taht they shoud care what the people think.
    2)They need to balance this so that the people and the ruler can be happy and have it the way they want and yet have ruels and laws that prevents the people from doing things that the ruler dosn't want them to do.

    2) The ruler needs to have a balance on their phillosophical goals because then the people know what to expect. And if they don't the people would get upset about it.
