Core Beliefs of Philosphers (Blog #8)




To understand the views of different Enlightenment philosophers, you will need to identify 3 philosophers and analyze their core beliefs.


Your assignment:

Name 3 philosophers and their 3 core beliefs. Make sure you explain each core belief.

  3. John Lockes core beliefs were Natural Rights- Life, Liberty, and Property.
    Beccairas core beliefs were that the accused people have rights and that torture should not be a punishment.
    Voltaires core beliefs were that the people deserved freedom of speech and that their choosen religion should be tolerated.

  4. Rousseau: Rousseau believed in individual freedom. He believed that people should have the right to vote for/have a say in who leads our country.

    Locke: He believed that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and property. That played a part in the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

    Voltaire: Voltaire fought for tolerance, reason, freedom of speech, and freedom of religious belief.

  6. John Locke believed in the natural rights; life, liberty, and property. This means he thinks people should have freedom to do what they want and, be able to own their own land.

    Rousseau believed in individual freedom. He thought that it should be everyone for themselves. He didn't like having a ruler over everyone.

    Wollstonecraft fought and believed for women equality. She thought it was unfair to let men have more equalities than women such as education, and the right to vote.

  7. 1) John Locke. John Locke had a positive view towards human nature. He believed that people could learn from experience and then better themselves. John Locke also believes that people are all born free and equal with life, liberty, and property.

    2) Francois Marie Arouet (Voltaire). Voltaire was one to fight for tolerance, reason, freedom of religious belief, and freedom of speech. He also fought against intolerance, prejudice, and superstition.

    3) Jean Jacques Rousseau. He was committed to individual freedom. He also believed that civilization corrupted people's natural goodness.

    Rousseau was passionately comitted to individual freedom. He strongly disagreed with other Enlightenment thinkers on many matters.

    Monresquieu- was a french writer who dovoted himeself to the study of political liberty.he aslso belived that britan was the best-giverned and most politically balanced country of his own day.
    Rousseau- was passionately committed to individual freedom. the son of a poor Swiss watchmaker, Rousseau won recognition as a writer of eassays.

    All people are born free and equal with three natural rights-Life, liberty, and property. He believed that a government's power comes from the consent of the people.

    2) Montesquieu-He believed that Britain was the best-governed and most politically balanced country of his own day. He believed that separation of powers would keep any individual or group from gaining total control of the government. He said that "Power should be a check to power."

    3) Rousseau- Committed to individual freedom. Rousseau believed that civilization corrupted people's natural goodness.
    He believed that the only good government was the one freely formed by the people and guided by the general will of society-a direct democracy.

Voltaire never stopped fighting for tolerance, reason, freedom of religious belief, and freedom of speech. He used his quill pen as if it were a deadly weapon in a thinker's war against humanity's worst enemies--intolerance, prejudice, and superstition.

    An influential French writer, Baron de Montesquieu, devoted himself to the study of political liberty. "Power," he wrote, "should be a check to power." Montesquieu proposed that separation of powers would keep any individual or group from gaining total control of the government.
