World War I spread to several continents and required the full resources of many governments. The war brought the United States into participation and later on propelled the U.S. to a new position of international power, which it holds today.
Your Assignment:
1.) Research the Zimmermann Note on the internet.
2.) Find a few sentences within the Zimmermann Note and quote them. Find ones that you believe to be the most damaging.
3.) Explain what the note was and why it was so important.

2)The Zimmermann Telegram was a coded message sent from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to Germany's ambassador in Mexico, Heinrich von Eckhardt, in January 1917. The British managed to intercept this coded message and were able to decipher it.
ReplyDeleteWithin this secret message, Zimmermann revealed Germany's plan to restart unrestricted submarine warfare as well as offered Mexico territory from the United States if Mexico were to declare war on the United States.
3) The note was a secret message that basically told the Germans plan of attack and it was improtant because it had the Germans entire plan.
During World War I, British authorities give Walter H. Page, the U.S. ambassador to Britain, a copy of the "Zimmermann Note," a coded message from Arthur Zimmermann, the German foreign secretary, to Count Johann von Bernstorff, the German ambassador to Mexico. In the telegram, intercepted and deciphered by British intelligence in late January, Zimmermann stated that in the event of war with the United States, Mexico should be asked to enter the conflict as a German ally. In return, Germany promised to restore to Mexico the lost territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. this was basicaly a secret massage that they had no right to send out.
ReplyDeleteThe Zimmerman Telegram aka 'note', was sent from a German official in Germany to a German official in Mexico asking him to join an aliance with Germans, the Germans told them that they would help get the USA back to for the Mexicans. it was NOT Germany asking Mexico to attack us. (the English government intercepted this telegram and, instead of showing it to the American government, they gave it to the media, this forced americaa into the war.)i find this damaging becuse we would have had mexico fighting us

The note was basically a declaration of war on The United States of America. It offered Mexico the chance to ally with Germany and in return, Mexico would get Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in return. It was important to USA because it showed how Germany was against us and wanted to begin a war with Mexico as their ally.

This is really scary because later Japan bombed pearl habor so the relationship between us was already sketchy.

If Mexico had agreed to this proposition, then the United States would have had an enemy on its border.

ReplyDelete2) They are telling th4em that they want the United States to stay out of the war and if they join the Allied side then they will ask Mexico to join them.
2)In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. This message helped draw the United States into the war and thus changed the course of history. The most damaging to the United States was probably telling us to stay out of the war!

* "You will inform the President of the above most secretly as soon as the outbreak of war with the United States of America is certain....invite Japan to immediate adherence and at the same time mediate between Japan and ourselves." - The U.S. soon realized (through this telegram) that EVERYONE would be fighting together against them. The U.S. would be standing alone.

The Zimmermann Telegram (Note) was a 1917 diplomatic proposal from the German Empire to Mexico to make war against the U.S. This Telegram was intercepted by British intelligence and it obviously made the U.S. mad. It was an important telegram because it instructed Ambassador Eckardt that if the U.S. appeared likely to enter the war, he was to approach the Mexican Government with a proposal for military alliance, with funding from Germany. Mexico was also promised territory.
