Reform and Terror (Blog #11)



With the great fear sweeping through France and the Revolution fully at hand many people were eventually put to death because of their opposition.

Your assignment:

1.) Identify who Maximilien Robespierre is.
2.) Summarize the quotation from Robespierre on page 660.
3.) What does the large number of executions among the urban poor and middle class suggest about support for the revolution?

  4. I knew there were a lot of trees but not this many! The airport is nice. They even have a guy handing out paper towels, mints, and little cups of mouth wash. All of that is right next to his tip jar!

  5. 1) Maximillien Robespierre was a jacobin leader in 1793. his supportes set out to build a republic of virtue. they tried to whipe out every trace of frances past they divided the mounts in to 30 days and had no sundays.
    2) he was a dictator he said that it help the french citasins stay true to the revolution.
    3) in a way it hepled with the revolution by making them stay true to it or they will be killed but it also was bad

  6. 1) Maximilien Robespierre was a 1793 Jacobin leader who gained power in France. He was a menace and killed many people, even for the simplest of things. He terrorized a ton of people and was a terrible person.

    2) What this quote is basically saying is that without terror you have no virtue and without virtue you have no terror. They basically even out. They help each other out, according to him. In Maximilien's eyes you need both in order for a government to succeed.

    3) The urban poor and middle class obviously did not respect where the revolution was heading. The revolution was meant to help them, but it ended up going the totally opposite direction. Many were killed and the reform for them was basically dismissed.

  7. Maximilien Robespierre was one of the Jacobin leaders in 1793. He and his followers tried to wipe out every trace of France's past.
    He was basically saying that without virtue there is no terror, and without terror there is no virtue.
    The large number indicated that those classes were against the ruler in the revolution. They were fighting him and did not believe in the ways that they were following at the time. They were fighting for their rights and for their opionion to be heard and thats not what the king wanted for his states. He killed them off hoping it would solve the problem.

  9. 1.) In the early months of 1793, Naximilien Robespierre was a Jocobins leader. He slowly gained power to. Him and his leaders set out to build a republic of cirtue by wiping out every trace of France's past.
    2.) You need virtue without virtue it is powerless. He is saying that you need virtue and you need terror because virtue without terror is murderous and terror without virtue is powerless.
    3.) The executions on the poor and middle class says that the rich thought they were more powerful than them and the ruler is not going to have much support for the revolution because the majority of the population was in the poor and middle class.

    3) It was obvious that things needed to change. The Higher class did not have the same punishment as the lower classes.

He defines terror as "swift, severe, indomitable justice." Using his reasoning, terror was simply an extreme ideal of virtue.

    3.) The execution of so many citizens of the lower classes displayed the indiscriminate manner of persecution brought on by the Terror. Robespierre acted mostly as a dictator, caring not of the fate of the people. Not long after the beginning of his reign, he was viewed as an enemy among the lower classes.

    2) He means that the people need to have a say in what happens and the enemies need to be in terror of what is next to come. Also says that virtue is a necessity for terror. It goes the same way, terror must have virtue in order to have power and meaning.

    3) The high class had more power than lower classes. It also showed their passion to not give up on what they believe in. The high class was treated way different then the lower classes.

      3) They were not treated fairly and were being killed for stupid little things. The rich were probably getting away with murdering 50 people and the poor were being killed for sneezing.

    1) Maximilien Robespierre was a Jacobin leader who gained power in France. He closed all churches and became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He governed France like a dictator and caused the Reign of Terror.

    2)He explains that virtue and terror are connected. He justified his use of terror by suggesting that it enabled French citizens to remain true to the ideals of the Revolution. Therefore, you cannot have virtue without terror.

    3)It displayed that the execution of so many from the lower class was started by the terror. Robespierre was a dictator, he didn't care about the people. He was soon thought of as an enemy.
