American democracy was a logical outgrowth of Enlightenment ideas. These ideas formed the basic foundation of the fledgling American Government.
Your Assignment:
Explain some of the enlightenment ideas in 22.2 and how they helped form our democracy that we enjoy today. (Make sure you hit on enlightenment thinkers and what ideals they came up with. Also, explain democracy and how that ties in with these ideals.)

The rise of individualism was one of the enlightenments. The goal was to get people to judge what was right or wrong on their own. They believed this created economic progress and people began to fight for themselves.
ReplyDeleteLocke believed it was really important in having natural rights which lead to the Deceleration of Independence. And Beccania Thought of the abolishment of torture which lead to the Bill of Rights.And Voltire believed in the freedom of religion so that also lead to the Bill of Rights.
ReplyDeleteTomas Hobbes thought that all humans were selfish and cruel from his experiences from the English Civil war. He thought that without government there would be war and life would be terrible.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke had a positive view towards human nature. He thought that people could learn and improve from situations that they experience.
Voltaire published many drama book that used satire against his opponents. He fought for religious freedom and tolerance.
Montesquieu studied political liberty and thought positively towards the way the government worked in Britain.
People began to believe that they could govern themselves. Some people like John Locke criticized absolute monarchies. Montesquieu wrote some books on how the division of power makes a government stronger. We use Montesquieu's ideas in our checks and balances system.

Thomas Jefferson when he wrote The Declaration of Independace, said that all people have the rights to life, liberty, and the pusuit of happiness. Montesquieu said that the government should have a seperation of powers. Nowdays in our government we have a seperation of powers in our three branches and John Locke's quote is now in our declaration of independance.

ReplyDeleteMary Wollstonecraft's strong advocate of educatioing for women helped our democracy because today woman are just as equal to men. Woman have the right to go to war and get an education now! Because back in the day they were forced to be a stay at home mom and just cook and clead while the men did the work. So as you can tell the woman have came along way since then.
